Biography
Actually, that isn't quite accurate; I spent three summers, beginning in 1979, working in various production departments at Malloy. Although I do not claim to be an expert at book printing, my experience working in the plant gave me a good understanding of the book making process and an appreciation for the skill of the people who actually make books for Malloy.
After I graduated from Trinity College (Hartford, CT) in 1982, I spent three years in the insurance business before returning to Malloy full time. I've been in the sales end of the business ever since. I am most familiar with our customers on the East Coast, although I've had a chance over the years to meet a good number of publishers across the country. Along the way, I earned an MBA from the University of Michigan.
Biography
After 13 years in California, at the Addison-Wesley School Division, working as a Malloy customer, I had the unique opportunity to move back to Ann Arbor and join the Malloy team. I had always regarded Malloy as an exceptional printer and I was honored to be hired fresh from the West Coast to assist in the Sales and Marketing efforts. Having been on the "other side of the fence" for many years, I was able to contribute new ideas and a different perspective.
Our sales, service, and marketing efforts have expanded over the years as Malloy has grown along with our customers. I have had the privilege to assist with customer education, sales and service support, development of marketing tools, customer events, trade shows, and marketing direction. I enjoy working with our customers and staying in touch with the day-to-day challenges when I substitute for vacationing Customer Service Reps. Since my publishing days, many things have changed, but here at Malloy we all strive to remain an exceptional printer that you can count on.
Biography
I started with Malloy in 1973. I spent my first five years working as a binder operator, a position I liked very much. However, I really wanted to learn more about the book business. So, I moved on and spent the next two years in our Job Planning Department where I learned about the real nuts and bolts of making books. I then moved from Job Planning to Estimating, working there for a number of years before becoming a Customer Service Representative. While I was in Customer Service I took on the additional responsibilities of In-House Sales Representative. I held this dual role for six plus years before focusing all of my time on sales, and I'm still at it.
I currently work with publishers from Russia to Hawaii and all across the U.S. I enjoy helping first time authors and established publishing companies achieve success with their book projects. East
Biography
Having spent eight years competing against Malloy, I finally figured out that if I couldn't beat them, I might as well join them. I did just that in January of 2005. My time with Malloy simply validates my prior thoughts of a first class organization.
Having graduated from Jacksonville State University (Jacksonville, AL) in 1989, I spent six years in the Healthcare industry before joining the Graphic Arts industry. My initial introduction into our industry included several months in the plant learning the various aspects of book manufacturing. The majority of my time however, has been spent developing many wonderful relationships with publishers throughout New England.
Biography
After graduating from Bard College with a B.A, in 1983, I did what all-good liberal arts degrees carrying new graduates do and headed for the world of Publishing. I spent my formative production and manufacturing years learning from and working with John Wiley & Sons and the then independent Prentice Hall. In 1990, I moved into sales working with full color component printers and book manufacturers.
In July 2002, I joined Malloy and have been enjoying working with the Customer Service Team at Malloy and the opportunity to build our customer base concentrating in the New York City area, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., and Maryland.
Biography
I started working in the Prepress Department at Malloy when I was a student at the University of Michigan in order to earn some money to pay my school bills. I wasn't intending to stay around after I graduated, but I'm still here. In fact, I've been at Malloy longer than any other person in the company.
In 1963, Prepress was called Layout, a descriptive word for the work we did laying out pages of film and taping them into imposed flats to make plates from. We had a very lean staff at the time and often worked ten to twelve hour days and weekends to get rush orders out the door. This could make for some long work weeks, but we had a great team and managed to have fun in our jobs. Many stories, many stories! In the early 70's, I was managing the Prepress Department when Herb Upton asked me to start calling on our customers in the Midwest and still manage Prepress. It was an exciting challenge for me, and I rapidly discovered that I really enjoyed sales. It wasn't long before I was spending nearly all of my time on the road and my days in prepress were behind me. In 1978, I made my first sales call in New York City, seeking work from Harper & Row Publishers. Although I didn't walk out of the appointment with a purchase order, not that I expected to, it wasn't long before we began to work with them and several of the other large publishers in New York. Our business with the East Coast publishers grew along with the amount of time I spent in the East. My travel routine quickly fell into place: I would leave home in Ann Arbor on most Tuesday mornings to fly to New York, and return on Friday evening. This itinerary hasn't changed since, and, as long as it works, I'm happy with it. The company has changed dramatically over the years; we're much bigger now, we have no camera equipment - all new pages are imposed CTP, and our webs churn out a lot more pages. However, I'm proud to say the camaraderie and focus on taking care of customers have not been lost, and I still enjoy spreading the good news about Malloy. Midwest
Biography
My first job at Malloy was in the front office answering phones, typing letters, etc. While this line of work didn't actually get "ink underneath my finger-nails" it did put printing in my blood. So, after a year, I jumped at a chance to work in our Planning Department (now Book Engineering), where I knew I would learn all the intricacies of how books are made at Malloy. Two years later, I became a Customer Service Representative primarily serving our customers on the West Coast.
I thoroughly enjoyed the interaction with publishers and decided from that experience that I wanted to get a little closer to them working in sales. In 1989, I became Malloy's representative for Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. I've had this position ever since and feel fortunate to have developed so many good friendships over the years. My strong interest in people and the publishing industry - to say nothing of how much I love to read - keep me going.
Biography
In one way or another I've been a "paper boy" for most of my life. When I was a kid I delivered the Chicago Tribune on my bicycle. When I graduated from Eastern Illinois in 1988, I took on a paper route of a different sort working as a sales rep for the P.H. Glatfelter paper company. For the next five years I worked with printers and publishers to help them select the most appropriate book papers to stock and/or specify for a project.
During my time with Glatfelter I became familiar with Malloy, not only as a supplier but also from some of the positive things some of my publishing customers had to say about the company. When an opportunity came along to represent Malloy in the Pacific Northwest, I was glad to take it. I relocated from Chicago to Seattle and represented Malloy there for seven years. In 2002, I took on some additional accounts in the Midwest and moved back to Chicago. Today, my account responsibilities cover a broad swath of the Midwest - IL, WI, IA, MO, KS - and Colorado. I particularly like this territory because it includes a variety of publishers - large to small - operating in several different markets. Just when I think I've pretty much met the publishing gamut, I meet a publisher that is different from all the rest. West
Biography
I was very familiar with Malloy when I joined the company as an account representative on the West Coast. I've known Malloy well since the late 1960's, they were a preferred vendor during my 30 plus years as a Designer, Assistant Art Director, and Manufacturing Manager for a college textbook publisher. I'm very active in the western publishing community through several organizations, especially Bookbuilders West, and I have been a frequent speaker at industry educational seminars.
I hope that you will find my design degree from California College of Arts and Crafts and my extensive book production and manufacturing experience on both sides of the desk useful credentials.
Biography
I joined Malloy after 17 years in publishing. Before joining Malloy, I was VP of Operations for O’Reilly Media. Throughout my career in publishing, my skills were primarily focused on managing customer service, production, print buying, inventory, fulfillment, as well as accounts receivable and facilities administration. My experiences and knowledge are rooted in the day-to-day operations of solving problems, creating efficiencies and improving productivity.
I earned my degree in Education from Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts. After a rewarding yet short stint in teaching, I worked for a number of years in merchandise management for a large retail store. From there, I launched into a new career at O’Reilly and began my journey of learning about technology and publishing. I have been fortunate to have had some great experiences during my years in publishing. I am equally excited to be part of Malloy’s sales team as the representative for the Pacific Northwest and California where I can utilize my skills from publishing and manufacturing to help find solutions that work for publishers.
